How to Check Course Accreditation Before Paying an Admission Fee

To check course accreditation in Nigeria, look for the specific university and programme in official records. A university’s licence and a programme’s accreditation answer different questions.

Record the exact programme first

Write down the institution’s full name, campus, award and programme. Similar names can describe different courses. An affiliate centre should also identify the awarding university; do not assume an approval applies to every teaching location.

Open the National Universities Commission’s accreditation information and inspect the relevant report. Check the programme name, status and date of the decision. An old screenshot circulating online may not show the latest position.

Ask the university to resolve uncertainty

If you cannot locate the programme, send admissions a precise question: “Please provide the current approval and accreditation information for [award/programme/campus], including the applicable decision date.” Ask for an official reference rather than a promotional flyer.

For a professional qualification, also consult the regulator for that profession. Academic accreditation and eligibility for a professional licence are related checks, but one should not be silently substituted for the other.

Save a decision record

Keep the official report link, date checked and the university’s written response. Compare that information with the admission offer before paying a non-refundable fee. If the information remains unclear, ask the regulator directly using its published contact route.

Does a university ranking prove accreditation?

No. A ranking is not a programme approval document. Check the actual course and award.

Does “new programme” mean unapproved?

Not automatically. Ask what approval stage applies and what evidence supports it. Do not infer a programme’s status from its age alone.

What about a claim of guaranteed accreditation soon?

Base your decision on the current official position. A future intention is not the same as an approval already granted to your programme.
