JAMB and School Names Do Not Match: How to Prepare for Clearance

A difference between your JAMB name and school record can delay clearance. Before paying for an affidavit or correction, establish exactly which record is wrong and what the institution requires.

Make a comparison sheet

List your name exactly as it appears on JAMB, the school application, O’Level certificate and identity record. Mark the actual difference: spelling, order, missing name or an entirely different name. Do not describe all of these as the same error.

For example, “Amina Bello Yusuf” and “Bello Amina Yusuf” may involve arrangement, while “Amina B. Yusuf” involves an abbreviation. The responsible office needs the precise difference to advise you.

Ask before obtaining new documents

Contact admissions or the school’s clearance office and ask which record must be corrected, who approves it and what supporting evidence is accepted. If the JAMB record needs correction, use the official JAMB process and any identity-verification instructions given there.

An affidavit may support an application in some circumstances, but it does not automatically rewrite an examination or admission database. Do not pay an agent to alter a PDF or printout.

Keep these records together

  • Original credentials and readable copies.
  • The application’s acknowledgement and registration details.
  • Written correction instructions from the relevant office.
  • Payment and submission references for an authorised correction.
  • A final check showing the corrected record where applicable.

Use consistent details in subsequent applications while the issue is being resolved. Creating more versions of your name makes later transcript, scholarship or mobilisation checks harder.

Should I change every record at once?

No. First establish the correct identity details and the official sequence. One correction may depend on another verified record.

What if clearance is close?

Report the discrepancy early and request written guidance about pending-correction evidence. Only the school can say whether it will accept that evidence for its clearance process.
