University Presentation Preparation: A Rehearsal Checklist for Students

A university presentation checklist should cover both the argument and the delivery. Good-looking slides cannot rescue an unclear answer to the assignment question.

Define the one main message

Write what you want the audience to understand by the end. Choose a small number of supporting points and evidence that fits the allotted time. Check the marking rubric before deciding how much background to include.

Build slides around ideas rather than paragraphs you intend to read word for word. Label figures clearly and cite the sources of borrowed data or images.

Rehearse with the actual time limit

  1. Practise the opening aloud.
  2. Explain each slide without reading every line.
  3. Time the complete talk, including transitions.
  4. Cut material if it exceeds the limit.
  5. Practise a short closing that answers the question.

If you are presenting as a group, rehearse the handovers. Confirm who advances slides, handles the file and answers which types of questions.

Prepare for practical problems

Keep the file in the required format and a readable backup, such as a PDF if permitted. Test graphs and font sizes on another screen. Check the room, equipment and submission instructions in advance.

Prepare a plain-language explanation of the most technical point. If a slide fails, you should still be able to communicate the main argument.

What if I do not know an answer?

Say what you can establish and identify what would need checking. Do not invent a statistic or pretend a limitation does not exist.

Should I memorise every sentence?

Know the structure and key evidence well enough to speak naturally. A few concise prompts can be more adaptable than dependence on one memorised script.

How should I use feedback?

Ask a practice listener what they understood, where the reasoning was unclear and whether the pace worked. Use those observations for a targeted revision.
