ATBU Admission Requirements 2026/2027
Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) Bauchi is a federal university of technology with a particularly strong engineering and environmental sciences tradition. If you’re looking at engineering, science, or management technology programmes in the north, ATBU is worth a serious look. Here’s the complete picture for 2026/2027 admission.
About ATBU
ATBU was established in 1980 and is located in Bauchi, Bauchi State. Like FUTMINNA and FUTO, it’s a technology-oriented university β which means its strongest departments are in engineering, applied sciences, and management technology. It’s a federal institution, which means admission is spread across states of the federation (federal character policy applies).
O’Level Requirements for ATBU
ATBU requires five credit passes in WAEC, NECO, or GCE O’Level, obtainable in not more than two sittings. English Language and Mathematics are compulsory for virtually all programmes. Your remaining required subjects depend on your intended course β sciences and technical subjects feature heavily given ATBU’s focus.
ATBU JAMB Cutoff Score 2026
ATBU’s minimum JAMB cutoff is 180 for most programmes. As with other federal technology universities, the effective admission scores after departmental screening are higher. Realistic benchmarks:
Engineering (Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Agricultural): 180β200
Computer Science / Computer Engineering: 180β200
Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics): 180β195
Management Technology (Business, Accounting, Public Administration): 180β190
Environmental Sciences / Geography: 180β190
Architecture: 180β200
ATBU is more accessible than southwestern federal universities for the same courses, especially for candidates from northern states where federal character allocations apply.

ATBU Post-UTME Screening
ATBU runs a Post-UTME screening examination for qualifying candidates. The screening is CBT-based, covering subjects in your UTME combination. Registration is done through atbu.edu.ng β check the portal from August onward. As with most federal universities, the screening registration window closes fast, so register promptly once it opens.
Direct Entry at ATBU
ATBU accepts Direct Entry applications from candidates with A’Level results (minimum of two passes in relevant subjects), ND at Lower Credit, or HND. All DE candidates must have the standard five O’Level credits including English and Mathematics. Apply via JAMB’s Direct Entry portal, then complete ATBU’s internal screening.
Federal Character and State of Origin
As a federal university, ATBU applies the federal character principle in admission β a percentage of slots are reserved for less-educationally-advantaged states (LEAS). If you’re from a state where ATBU has a high catchment, this can work in your favor. Confirm your state’s allocation with the ATBU admissions office if you’re applying from a northern state with potentially preferential allocation.
Campus Life at ATBU
Bauchi offers a significantly lower cost of living compared to Lagos or Ibadan. The university has on-campus accommodation, though competition for hostels is high. The city of Bauchi has reasonable amenities, and the campus itself is green and relatively spacious. If you’re open to studying in the north and your target course is in ATBU’s strong areas (engineering, computer science, environmental sciences), it’s a practical and affordable choice.
