UNIBEN Admission Requirements 2026/2027

The University of Benin (UNIBEN) is a major federal university in Edo State with a strong reputation across law, medicine, engineering, pharmacy, and social sciences. It’s also one of the more geographically accessible federal universities for candidates from the South-South and South-East. Here’s what you need for 2026/2027 admission.

About UNIBEN

UNIBEN was established in 1970 in Benin City, Edo State. It’s a comprehensive university offering programmes spanning medicine, law, engineering, pharmacy, sciences, arts, social sciences, education, environmental studies, and management sciences. The university has strong ties to the Edo-Delta region and draws significant student populations from across southern Nigeria.

O’Level Requirements for UNIBEN

UNIBEN requires five credit passes in WAEC, NECO, or GCE O’Level at not more than two sittings. English Language is compulsory across all programmes. Mathematics is required for science, engineering, pharmacy, management sciences, and most social science programmes. The three remaining credits must be in subjects relevant to your intended faculty.

UNIBEN Post-UTME Screening

UNIBEN conducts a Post-UTME screening (CBT format) for qualifying candidates. Registration is done through uniben.edu — the portal opens after JAMB result release, typically August–September, and closes within weeks. Your JAMB and Post-UTME scores are combined to produce an admission aggregate. Check the UNIBEN admissions portal regularly for screening dates and instructions.

Direct Entry at UNIBEN

UNIBEN accepts DE candidates with A’Level results (two passes minimum in relevant subjects), ND at Lower Credit, or HND. O’Level credit requirements still apply in full. Apply through JAMB’s DE portal, then register for UNIBEN’s screening.

UNIBEN vs. Other Federal Universities in the South

UNIBEN occupies a useful middle ground: more competitive than most state universities, but less cutthroat than UNILAG or UI. For candidates whose JAMB scores land between 200–240, UNIBEN is often a realistic option for courses that would require 260+ at the top schools. Benin City has a well-developed urban environment, living costs are manageable, and the university has reasonable infrastructure. It’s a pragmatic and academically solid choice for South-South and South-East candidates especially.
