An admission-deferral request asks the institution to move an approved start date. It does not defer your admission by itself; you need the institution’s formal decision.
Check the policy first
Ask admissions whether deferral is permitted for your programme, when you must apply and whether acceptance or other steps are required first. Check whether the next intake is available and whether fees or conditions may change.
Do not assume a policy from another university applies to your offer. Professional and limited-intake programmes may have specific arrangements.

Subject: Request to defer admission — [application reference]
Dear [appropriate office], I received an offer for [programme] for [session]. I request permission to defer commencement to [proposed session/intake] because [brief accurate reason]. My application reference is [reference], and my current acceptance/payment status is [status]. Please advise whether this request can be approved, what supporting documents are required and which actions I must complete before the current deadline. I can be reached at [contact]. Thank you for considering the request.
After sending
Retain the acknowledgement and track the decision. If approval is granted, check the new start date, conditions, treatment of any payments and action needed to reactivate or register later.
Store the approval with the original offer. Set reminders for the new session’s requirements rather than assuming the school will complete every step automatically.
Should I stop responding to admission deadlines while waiting?
Ask the institution what applies to the pending request. Submission alone does not suspend the existing deadline.
Must I disclose detailed personal circumstances?
Provide the explanation and evidence the official process requires, using a private channel. Avoid unnecessary sensitive detail in a general email thread.
What if the request is refused?
Ask what options remain under the institution’s rules. Do not present a pending or rejected request as an approved deferral.
