University of Ibadan Admission Requirements 2026/2027

The University of Ibadan (UI) is Nigeria’s first university and consistently ranks as one of the best in the country. Getting in is genuinely competitive β€” UI sets some of the highest standards for admission among Nigerian universities. If you’re serious about UI for 2026/2027, here’s exactly what you’re up against.

Why UI Is Highly Competitive

UI receives far more qualified applications than it has spaces. Medicine, Law, Pharmacy, and Engineering are perennially oversubscribed β€” thousands of candidates with strong JAMB scores compete for a relatively limited number of slots. Even “less competitive” programmes at UI typically attract candidates with scores well above the minimum. Your best strategy going in is to be realistic about which programmes you can genuinely compete for, based on your JAMB score and O’Level grades.

O’Level Requirements for UI

UI requires five credit passes in relevant O’Level subjects including English Language, from WAEC, NECO, or equivalent. Two sittings are accepted. What makes UI stricter than many schools is that they apply departmental O’Level requirements rigorously β€” a credit in the wrong science subject, for example, can disqualify an otherwise strong application. Match your O’Level combination precisely to your target course.

UI JAMB Cutoff Scores 2026

UI’s general JAMB cutoff is typically set at 180 β€” but that’s the floor, not where competition actually happens. In practice, you need significantly higher to be considered for competitive programmes. Rough benchmarks from recent cycles:

Medicine and Surgery: 280+ to be competitive, 250+ minimum to be considered
Pharmacy / Dentistry: 250+ competitive
Law: 240+ competitive
Engineering disciplines: 220–250
Sciences and Social Sciences: 200–220 puts you in the running
Arts and Humanities: 180–200 for most programmes

These are indicative β€” confirm the exact figures on UI’s admissions portal (ui.edu.ng) each cycle.

UI Post-UTME

UI conducts a highly competitive Post-UTME screening. In past years this has included both a written aptitude test and O’Level document screening. The Post-UTME score is factored into the overall ranking alongside your JAMB score. Candidates who perform poorly in Post-UTME can lose their place to lower-JAMB-scoring candidates who aced the screening β€” so take it seriously.

Post-UTME registration is done through UI’s official portal. The window opens shortly after UTME results, usually for two to three weeks. Monitor ui.edu.ng actively immediately after your JAMB result drops.

Direct Entry to UI

UI admits Direct Entry candidates with A’Level passes (minimum of two passes in relevant subjects), OND at Upper Credit, HND, or first degree for certain postgraduate-track programmes. The O’Level credit requirements still apply. DE candidates enter at 200 level if accepted.

Tips for a Competitive Application

If your JAMB score is around 200–220, go for programmes where that score is genuinely competitive rather than stretching for Medicine or Law. UI’s less-heralded programmes β€” History, Religious Studies, Adult Education, Library Science β€” are sometimes undersubscribed and admit candidates with lower JAMB scores. They’re still UI degrees, and they still carry the weight of the University of Ibadan name. Think strategically about where you can actually win a spot rather than applying to Medicine with a 200 and hoping for a miracle.
