NELFUND institutional charges and upkeep should occupy different lines in your budget. Money paid to the school is not automatically money available for food, transport or accommodation.
Use two simple records
Create an institutional-payment record with the amount requested, the amount confirmed by the school and the date posted to your ledger. Create an upkeep record with the amount actually received and the bank date.
NELFUND explains that these components have different payment destinations. Track what has been confirmed rather than combining application amounts into one spending balance.
A planning example
Suppose your school ledger confirms an illustrative ₦120,000 fee payment, but your personal account has not received upkeep. Your available living-cost money from that loan is still zero at that point. The fee payment may reduce what you owe the institution, but it does not fund a cash withdrawal.
The figures above are an example, not a NELFUND award schedule. Use the amounts displayed for your own application and school record.
Keep commitments realistic
- List compulsory school charges separately from personal expenses.
- Mark expected funds as pending until confirmed.
- Keep an emergency transport and communication plan where possible.
- Ask the bursary about any unallocated payment before assuming a refund.
- Retain a monthly record of the loan amounts credited in your name.
Read the loan agreement before borrowing. It is a loan obligation, not automatically a scholarship or grant. For decisions about your personal repayment position, use the official agreement and seek qualified advice if needed.
Can I spend institutional charges on another expense?
Those payments go through the institutional route described by NELFUND. Budget using the actual payment destination and your agreement.
Is a pending payment safe to promise a landlord?
Explain its actual status. A pending application is not the same as cash already available to meet a dated commitment.
