What Is a JAMB Cut-Off Mark?

A JAMB cut-off mark is the minimum UTME score that JAMB and individual institutions require for consideration for admission. Scoring at or above the cut-off mark does not guarantee admission — it only makes you eligible to be considered. You must also meet the university’s departmental cut-off and pass any Post-UTME screening conducted by the institution.

Official JAMB Cut-Off Marks for 2026

JAMB approves minimum cut-off marks for different categories of institutions. For the 2026/2027 academic session, the official approved cut-off marks are:

  • Federal and State Universities: 140
  • Polytechnics and Monotechnics: 100
  • Colleges of Education: 100
  • Innovative Enterprise Institutions (IEIs): 100

It is important to note that 140 is the minimum national threshold. Individual universities are free to set higher departmental cut-off marks for specific programmes, particularly competitive courses.

JAMB Cut-Off Marks by Institution 2026

Beyond the national minimum, each university sets its own internal cut-off marks by department. Below are approximate cut-off marks for some competitive courses at major Nigerian universities in 2026:

Medicine and Surgery (MBBS)

  • University of Lagos (UNILAG): 280+
  • University of Ibadan (UI): 260+
  • University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN): 250+
  • Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU): 260+

Law (LLB)

  • University of Lagos: 250+
  • University of Ibadan: 240+
  • Ahmadu Bello University (ABU): 230+

Engineering (Various)

  • University of Lagos: 230+
  • Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA): 200+
  • Obafemi Awolowo University: 220+

Accounting and Business Administration

  • Most federal universities: 180–220
  • State universities: 160–200

Arts and Humanities Courses

  • Most federal universities: 160–190
  • State universities: 140–180

Note: These are approximate figures based on historical patterns. Final 2026 cut-off marks will be confirmed after the UTME results are released (expected late April/May 2026) and at the Post-UTME stage.

What Happens After JAMB Releases Cut-Off Marks?

The 2026 cut-off mark announcement process works as follows:

  • Step 1: JAMB conducts the UTME (April 16–25, 2026) and releases results within 24–72 hours.
  • Step 2: JAMB holds its annual policy stakeholders’ meeting where official cut-off marks are announced for the 2026/2027 session.
  • Step 3: Individual universities publish their departmental cut-off marks and open their Post-UTME screening registration.
  • Step 4: Candidates who meet the cut-off and pass Post-UTME are listed on the admission list and admitted via JAMB CAPS.

How JAMB Cut-Off Marks Affect Your Admission Chances

Below the National Cut-Off (Less than 140)

If your UTME score is below 140, you cannot be admitted into any university in Nigeria. You may, however, be eligible for polytechnics or colleges of education (minimum score: 100). Alternatively, you can apply through Direct Entry (DE) if you have the required qualifications.

Score Between 140 and 199

With a score between 140–199, you are eligible for university admission but will be restricted to less competitive courses and institutions. State universities may accept you for arts or social science courses. Consider applying to a second choice institution with lower departmental cut-offs.

Score Between 200 and 249

A score in this range opens doors to most federal and state universities for the majority of courses. You will be competitive for science, engineering, and social science departments in most Nigerian universities.

Score of 250 and Above

Scoring 250 and above significantly improves your chances of gaining admission into competitive courses such as Medicine, Law, Pharmacy, and Computer Science at top Nigerian universities. A score above 280 in Medicine places you among the most competitive candidates nationally.

JAMB CAPS and Admission Processing

Once cut-off marks are published and Post-UTME conducted, all admissions in Nigeria are processed through the JAMB Central Admission Processing System (CAPS). Through CAPS, you can:

  • Accept or reject an admission offer from a university
  • Change your institution or course (subject to JAMB rules)
  • Check your admission status in real time
  • Print your JAMB admission letter

To understand how to use JAMB CAPS effectively and navigate the admission process, see our full guide on JAMB 2026 UTME/DE registration and admission.

Can You Get Admission Without Reaching the Cut-Off?

No. JAMB’s cut-off mark is a mandatory threshold. Candidates who score below the minimum cut-off for their institution type cannot be admitted. There are no exceptions for the national minimum. Individual universities may only set cut-offs above, never below, the national minimum.

However, candidates who do not meet the university cut-off can still explore options such as:

  • Choosing a less competitive course at the same institution
  • Applying to a state or private university with lower departmental cut-offs
  • Registering for polytechnic admission (minimum score: 100)
  • Applying through JAMB Direct Entry (DE) if they hold an OND, HND, NCE, or A-Level qualification

Tips for Candidates Worried About the Cut-Off Mark

  • Prepare thoroughly for Post-UTME. Many universities weigh Post-UTME scores heavily. Even a moderate UTME score can be overcome with an outstanding Post-UTME result.
  • Be strategic with your course choice. If your score is around 150–180, apply for courses with lower cut-offs that still align with your career interests.
  • Verify your O-Level requirements. You must have the correct O-Level subjects for your chosen course. See our guide on O-Level subject requirements for most courses.
  • Monitor the JAMB portal and your email for updates on cut-off mark announcements and admission offers.

Frequently Asked Questions About JAMB Cut-Off Marks 2026

Q1: What is the minimum JAMB score for university admission in 2026?

The minimum JAMB cut-off mark for university admission in 2026 is 140 for both federal and state universities. This is the national threshold approved by JAMB. Individual universities may set higher departmental cut-offs.

Q2: What JAMB score do I need for Medicine in 2026?

For Medicine and Surgery (MBBS), you typically need a minimum score of 250–280 at most federal universities. UNILAG and UI are among the most competitive, often requiring 260 and above. Always check the specific departmental cut-off for your preferred institution.

Q3: When will JAMB announce the 2026 cut-off marks?

JAMB typically announces the official cut-off marks after the UTME results are released. For 2026, this is expected in May or June 2026, following the completion of the main exam (April 16–25, 2026).

Q4: Is the JAMB cut-off mark the same for all universities?

No. JAMB sets a national minimum cut-off (140 for universities in 2026), but each institution sets its own departmental cut-offs, which are almost always higher than the national minimum. The more competitive the university and course, the higher the internal cut-off.
