FG Approves Nine New Private Universities in Nigeria – Full List and Details

Posted on August 14, 2025August 14, 2025 By Adesope Ridwan

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially accredited nine new private universities in different states of the country. The Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting that took place on August 14, 2025, and was chaired by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu gave the approval.

This is in line with moves to expand the enrollment at universities, clearing a 551 pending applications, and imposing stricter operating standards on the licensing of private universities.

The Minister of Education explained that there is currently a moratorium on new applications. Only proposals acceptable with regards to the National Universities Commission (NUC) guidelines will now be accepted.

This is the full list of the newly accredited private universities with descriptions in detail for each university.

Why This Matters for Students and Nigeria’s Education Sector

The accreditation of such universities means more spaces for intake, diversified courses available, and national growth. It also signifies a shift towards specialized, flexible, and skill-based education in Nigeria.

But with the new moratorium, potential applicants for private university licenses shall have to pass stricter quality assurance requirements prior to approval.

✅ For students: A good opportunity to obtain new universities that can offer more new programs not available in older institutions.

✅ For parents: Those universities can provide more affordable options close to home.

✅ In Nigeria’s education system: This surge could ease the burden on public universities.
