The Times Higher Education, known as THE, a reputable university-ranking organization based in the United Kingdom, recently released its 2024 World University assessment. According to the evaluation, Bayero University, Kano (BUK), has been ranked as Nigeria’s overall best university in terms of ‘international outlook.’ THE’s global ranking placed BUK at 1,016 among universities worldwide, making it the 5th best university in Nigeria.

This assessment involved over 1904 universities worldwide and saw participation from 108 African universities. THE, known for its rigorous and comprehensive evaluation, assesses universities across 108 countries. Of the 97 African universities that submitted data, only 25, including Bayero University, received a ranking, while the rest were given “reporter” status.

The table is based on our newly developed WUR 3.0 methodology. This methodology comprises carefully calibrated performance indicators that assess an institution’s performance across five key areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry outlook, and international outlook.

Facts about Bayero University Kano (BUK)

The origin of Bayero University Kano can be traced back to the establishment of Ahmadu Bello College in 1960. Initially, it was situated within the School for Arabic Studies (SAS) in the historic city of Kano. When Ahmadu Bello University was founded in Zaria in 1962, the college was renamed Abdullahi Bayero College. 1964, it relocated to a temporary site at the old Kano Airport Hotel. It enrolled its first cohort of ten undergraduates in a B.A. degree program affiliated with Ahmadu Bello University.

The University is equipped with a modern library, which has state-of-the-art technology that allows staff and students to access various information resources effortlessly. To cater to the specific information needs of our staff, students, and researchers, we have implemented selective dissemination of information in the form of alert services. Additionally, the library has subscriptions to electronic databases that adhere to international standards, allowing users to access information resources from any location and at any time. This ensures the library’s resources are easily accessible and available to all users, regardless of physical location.

The recent award received by BUK is a significant milestone in their efforts to advance journalism and media training in Nigeria. Through this award, BUK collaborates with seven universities to implement the newly adopted national journalism and media training and research curriculum. The focus is on promoting new media business models, especially within the university campuses and media houses, which is expected to have a far-reaching impact.

One notable aspect of this initiative is disseminating investigative reports in local languages, aiming to engage communities actively in anti-corruption and accountability reforms. Additionally, the program promotes gender equity and inclusion in investigative and data-driven Nigerian journalism, focusing on supporting young women and disabled individuals through a dedicated scholarship program.

BUK is now considered one of the top universities in Nigeria, trailing behind Covenant University, University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, and Federal University of Technology, which claimed the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th positions, respectively. Notably, Bayero University also secured the top position in several regions across Nigeria, including the North-West, North-Central, North-East, South-East, and South-South regions.

THE’s ranking is based on 13 calibrated performance indicators spread across four areas: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook. Bayero University excelled in international outlook, securing the top position in this category. Additionally, it ranked 2nd in the country regarding student full-time enrollment (SFTE), with a score of over 44.4%, and was rated 3rd in research.

In the 2023 Sub-Saharan Africa University World Rankings, our university secured the 71st position.
According to the Times Higher Education World Ranking for 2023, The university was recognized as Nigeria’s fourth-best university.
Globally, The University is placed in the 1001-1200 band in the 2023 Times Higher Education World Rankings and the 401-500 band in the 2023 Young University Rankings.
The University achieved a global ranking of 601-800 for clinical and health sciences and physical sciences in the 2023 Times Higher Education World Rankings.
