Keep assignment references from the moment you begin reading. Reconstructing missing sources on submission day can leave you with inaccurate citations or claims you can no longer verify.
Create a source record
For each source, save the author or organisation, title, publication date, stable link or DOI and the page or section relevant to your note. Record the source type as well: a journal article, book chapter and website may need different reference details.
Use your lecturer’s required citation style. A reference manager can help organise records, but imported details still need checking against the original source.
Separate three kinds of notes
- Direct quotation: copy exactly, mark it clearly and record the page.
- Paraphrase: restate the idea accurately and keep its source attached.
- Your analysis: explain your own interpretation or question separately.
This separation matters because changing a few words does not make a source’s idea your original finding. When drafting, cite the evidence at the point where you use it.
Do a final matching check
Read each in-text citation and confirm that its reference-list entry exists. Then inspect each reference entry and confirm that you actually used it. Check names, dates and links rather than relying on an automatic bibliography without review.
Do not cite a paper you have not checked merely because another writer cited it. If you must discuss a secondary citation, follow the required style’s rules and be clear about what you read.
Should I cite common knowledge?
Use your discipline’s conventions and ask the lecturer when uncertain. Specific data, distinctive arguments and borrowed wording need a traceable source.
What about AI-generated references?
Verify every source against a real publication. A plausible-looking title or DOI is not proof that the reference exists or supports the claim.
Can I fix references at the end?
You can format them later, but collect the necessary details now. Formatting cannot recover a missing page or an untraceable quotation.
