Use university past questions as practice material, not as a promise of the next examination. The most useful question is not “Will this repeat?” but “Can I solve a new version of this problem?”
Match the paper to the current course
Check the course code, topic coverage and examination instructions. A curriculum change can make part of an older paper irrelevant. Use the current course outline and lecturer’s guidance to set the scope.
Try a small section without notes before looking at a solution. Record where you became stuck: understanding the question, recalling a concept, selecting a method or completing the calculation.
Turn errors into revision tasks
For each missed question, write the topic, error and next practice action. For example: “Probability — treated dependent events as independent — redo two contrasting examples.” That is more actionable than marking the entire chapter as difficult.
After reviewing the method, attempt a similar question with changed numbers or wording. If you can only recognise the original answer, you have not yet tested the underlying understanding.
Add timed practice
Once you can solve questions accurately, practise under the paper’s actual time and choice rules. Include time for reading instructions and checking answers. Do not use an unverified answer key as the final authority; compare disputed solutions with course materials or ask the lecturer.
Should I study only topics that appear frequently?
Use frequency to notice patterns, but cover the current learning outcomes. A rarely tested topic can still appear.
Is a leaked paper the same as a past question?
No. Use legitimate practice resources and follow your institution’s academic-integrity rules. Do not buy material advertised as an unauthorised live examination.
How do I know the practice is helping?
Repeat a previously difficult question later without its solution. Track accuracy, explanation and time, rather than the number of pages you have read.
