President Tinubu Approves Establishment of New Federal Universities in Osun and Ekiti States

President Bola Tinubu has signed into law bills to create two new federal universities in Nigeria. The two new institutions approved are the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences in Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State, and the Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences in Ilesa, Osun State.

The Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences is to promote education and research in technology and environmental science. Situated in Iyin Ekiti, the university is supposed to offer specialized training and support technological development in the area.

The Federal University of Medical and Medical Sciences, Ilesa, Osun State will have specializations in medical education and medical research. The university will address the shortage of medical professionals and enhance the healthcare sector in the area.

Such is the case with universities recently announced for their opening by the government: their opening is a gesture to provide increased access to higher education and in pursuit of regional needs. Specialization has driven these institutions to generate qualified professionals that can contribute to Nigeria’s growth.

Approval for these universities has been well-received by local communities and stakeholders who look forward to the positive contribution in education and economic development in their areas.
