How to Outline a University Essay Before Writing the First Paragraph

A university essay outline should show how your answer develops, not just list the topics you plan to mention. Begin with the assignment question and the claim your evidence can support.

Break down the instruction

Identify the task word: explain, compare, evaluate, discuss or analyse. Note the subject, scope and required sources. A comparison essay needs a basis for comparison; an evaluation needs criteria for judgement.

Write a provisional answer in one or two sentences. You can revise it after reading, but it gives the outline a direction.

Plan the body paragraphs

For each paragraph, record the point, supporting evidence, explanation and link to the main question. Do not add a source simply because it contains a keyword. Explain how it supports or challenges your point.

Example outline for a comparison: introduction and criteria; first major similarity; first important difference; consequences of that difference; limits or counterargument; conclusion. Adapt the structure to the actual question rather than forcing every essay into five paragraphs.

Check the argument before drafting

  • Does every section answer the question?
  • Is the evidence strong enough for the claim?
  • Have you addressed a plausible objection?
  • Is there room for analysis within the word limit?
  • Does the conclusion follow from the body?

Assign a rough word budget. If the background section takes half the total, you may leave too little space for the analysis being assessed.

Should I write the introduction first?

You can draft a short provisional version, then revise it once the body is clearer. Do not spend the entire session perfecting an opening for an argument you have not built.

What if the evidence changes my view?

Revise the outline. A coherent answer supported by the material is more useful than defending the first idea at all costs.

Can I use a template?

Use it as a structure aid, but follow the lecturer’s rubric and your discipline’s conventions. Keep the argument and examples specific to your task.
