Lecture Notes Too Long? Turn Them Into Questions You Can Answer

Turn lecture notes into questions when you want to check understanding rather than just recognise familiar wording. Each question should ask you to produce an explanation, distinction or solution.

Start with the course objective

Look at what the topic expects you to do. “Understand photosynthesis” is broad; “explain how light intensity affects the rate under stated conditions” creates a more useful study task.

Choose a small section of notes and make several question types. Keep the original page reference so you can check a disputed answer later.

Four question patterns

  • Definition: What does this term mean, and what would not count as an example?
  • Comparison: How do these two ideas differ under the same conditions?
  • Process: What happens first, why, and what changes if one step fails?
  • Calculation: Which method applies, what assumptions are needed and how do the units work?

For example, instead of copying a formula three times, ask yourself when it applies and solve a new problem that requires choosing it.

Test before checking

Close the notes and answer in writing or aloud. Then compare with the course material, mark missing reasoning and make a short correction. Revisit the question later with a fresh example.

The UNC Learning Center recommends active engagement rather than relying only on rereading. The questions above are an original practical format for applying that idea to your own notes.

How many questions should I make?

Enough to cover the key objectives, without spending the whole session formatting cards. Start with five useful questions and test them.

What if I can recite an answer but not apply it?

Add a case, changed condition or calculation. Application questions expose gaps that a memorised definition can hide.

Should I discard the full notes?

No. Keep the original material for context and verification. Your question set is a study tool, not a replacement for the complete course record.
